Description
StAR is an interactive installation transforming the waterway into a theater of street and pop art featuring competitive sailing. StAR's daytime event Wednesday February 9, 2022 4 - 6 PM EST is open to the public at no cost but requires registration. Street Art Regatta was conceived in 2019 to match competitive sailing with popular street art. The event is presented as a collaboration of Grace Arts Center, Inc. and Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation (LYCSF). StAR officially launched April 29, 2021 near the Lauderdale Yacht Club along the Intracoastal Waterway in the City of Fort Lauderdale. Youth sailing teams actively participate in StAR's art installation. Award-winning sailing coaches based at the LYC Sailing Center guide sailors into tight formations 'choreographing' the boats and painted sails using competitive regatta tactics to create interactive performance art. Artists were asked to envision 'dancing on the water' painting unique original images on each side of sail canvases. Noted painters who were not part of the street art community also responded to StAR's creative challenge resulting in a collaborative composition by a professional ballet Principal recovering from injuries through painting therapy. History In 2006, the late Miami-based Florida Hall of Fame Artist, Purvis Young, painted thirty foot sails for the Winterfest Boat Parade. Audiences were amazed at the Artist's iconic images which appeared to move across the sail canvas pressed by the evening ocean breeze. In subsequent years, local, national and international artists joined a new non-profit initiative (COAT) creating walkable galleries in South Florida communities painting murals across multiple buildings on city blocks to revitalize neighborhoods and business collaboration. In 2021, Artists Stefano Alcantara, Jay Belluchi ‘Remote,’ ‘Buns,’ ‘Hoxxoh,’ ‘Orla,’ Lori Practico, ‘Ripes,’ Tom Rosetti, Suzanne Scherer, ‘Surge,’ Laura Tan and NY based ‘Lady Pink’ and ‘El Cekis’ with London native Andrew Cotton painted unique original compositions on sail canvases. Several painters who are not part of the street art community responded to StAR’s creative challenge including Isa Rodriguez, a retired professional ballet Principal of the Miami City Ballet, recovering from injuries through painting therapy. Ways to support and enjoy StAR The free sailing event the afternoon of February 9, 2022 is followed by an auction sponsored by GAC, Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation with generous support from individuals, artists and organizations including the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department, Quantum Sails and the New River Fine Art Gallery.
