MILWAUKEE, WI — Wisconsin school districts closed or switched to virtual classes as instructional staff isolated amid a wave of COVID-19 cases, the districts announced Sunday. Milwaukee Public Schools will hold virtual learning classes until Tuesday as COVID-19 cases swept through its staff, the district said in a statement. In-person classes were expected to begin again on Jan. 10. The Greendale School District also closed Monday as a high percentage of its staff tested positive for the virus, the district announced. School administrators at the next board meeting will come up with strategies to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Meanwhile, the Elmbrook School District announced that its staff will have to mask up for the first two weeks of the spring semester. The district said it strongly recommended all of its students to wear masks as well. From then on, the district will hold classes virtually, district superintendent Carl D. Jenkins said in a statement. Both Milwaukee and Greendale schools will continue meal pickup services and COVID-19 testing services. In the week of Dec. 27 to Friday, Milwaukee Public Schools data showed that 136 staff members tested positive for the coronavirus. Thirty students tested positive. Wisconsin reported 6,738 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, Wisconsin Department Health Services data showed. The seven-day average for new cases was 4,626 per day.
