Rhode Island Driver Accused Of Fleeing Fatal Weekend Crash

WARWICK, RI — A Charlestown man was arrested over the holiday weekend after police said he left the scene of a crash that claimed the life of a teenage driver. The crash happened around 1 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 95 South, near the Route 117 overpass. According to police, a Mercedes sedan, driven by 30-year-old Aramis Segura, was going fast in the left lane, when the vehicle swerved across the third lane, and into the second. The car then rear-ended a Nissan Altima in the second lane, pushing it off the road and into the grassy shoulder next to the highway. The car rolled down the embankment, hitting a tree and rolling over onto the roof. The 17-year-old driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene, Rhode Island State Police said. The crash spun Segura's Mercedes into the breakdown lane. He then got out of the car and ran away, police said. He was later arrested at his Charlestown home and arrainged before a justice of the peace on the following charges: Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in deathDriving to endanger, resulting in deathObstruction of justiceOperating on a suspended license Segura's bail was set at $10,000. He was taken to the Adult Correctional Institution and held for breaking probation on a previous breaking and entering charge. "Our condolences go out to the loved ones of the victim for their loss," State Police Col. James Manni said. "The investigating troopers worked very hard to quickly apprehend the suspect and we are working with the Attorney General's office to ensure that justice is served."
