Description
PITTSBURGH, PA — Ed Gainey is being sworn in as Pittsburgh's 61st mayor and its first Black one, marking a seismic political shift in a city and region that have experienced considerable racial tensions in recent years.
Gainey, 51, a former state representative from the city's Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood, is being inaugurated in a ceremony that is virtual and partially pre-recorded because of the pandemic. Gainey defeated former Mayor Bill Peduto in the Democratic primary last May and rolled to an easy victory over Republican candidate Tony Moreno in November.
