Here are the top 3 stories today in Anchorage: Destructive winds have been plaguing the Anchorage area for the last four days, flipping over airplanes and trucks, leaving thousands without power, and causing school cancellations. Two shelters have opened in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough for people needing refuge from these powerful winds and cold temperatures. (The Seattle Times)Alaskans are wondering about the lack of salt on the roads during its long, cold, and snowy winter. Currently, salt is still used at times to help lessen the slippery conditions on Anchorage's roads. However, the Municipality of Anchorage has opted for sand over salt in most situations. This is because of the damaging effects salt can have on the environment and its wildlife.
