The IAFF Center of Excellence will be hosting a free, behavioral health training for fire fighters, paramedics and dispatchers. Join the IAFF Center of Excellence team for a continuing education training for members and peer supporters looking to expand their knowledge about behavioral health issues in the fire service. This training will highlight the most common behavioral health concerns for fire service members including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress and suicide. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the impact of these behavioral health issues and how certain aspects of the fire service occupation are protective and risk factors for developing certain behavioral health conditions. This presentation will include strategies for improving mental well-being and highlights available treatment options to address the needs of members. Secondly, this training will address the complex issue of suicide, both within the fire service and society at large and discuss theories of suicide, risk and protective factors and barriers to accessing treatment. Attendees will learn about identifying warning signs for suicide and the basics of assessment in an effort to better equip them to help themselves, as well as peers. This presentation will seek to empower attendees to ask appropriate questions if they are concerned for suicide in a peer and how to best intervene. Training is held in conjunction with the Orange County Fire Fighters Association Local 2057 and the Florida Professional Firefighters' 3rd District affiliates. Classes will begin at 10 AM EST at the Orange County Fire Fighters Association union hall at 6969 Venture Cir, Orlando, FL 32807 Fire service members outside of Orange County FD are welcome and encouraged to attend. Complimentary lunch and certificates of attendance will be provided. All attendees must register to participate.
