A few thoughts on January's Cookbook Sea & Shore ... I am SO excited about this book, British food get's SUCH a bad rap, and I can't wait to dive into this beautiful romantic book head first and really fall in love with the food from the conrwall seaside. I will freely admit I've tried a few recipes already and they DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Keen's Cheddar on Toast with Sweet Leeks is Scott's take on the classic and somewhat famous Rarebit and is was amazing, both fresh out of the oven and a day later for a quick lunch. Cornish Fish Pie with Soft Leeks and Fennel Topped with Sourdough Crumbs was THE HIT of my New Year's Eve dinner, and it was by far the simpliest thing I made (25 minutes from picking up my knife to setting on the table!) Scott started cooking for others when she opened a B&B in the Cornwall seaside and the book is filled with stories of her family & life there. She really makes you feel like a guest in her home, even just reading her book the hospitality and love for others permiates every page. The first item in the book after the introduction is a "bonus" recipe: Scott begins with "HELLO, HELLO TO YOU. I am so happy to be here with you all. So, to begin, I have baked you a cake - my carrot cake. A favourite in our house and, of course, a classic." I mean, not only do I want to stay at this woman's B&B, I want to have afternoon tea with her and soak in her warmth and generousity like a spunge. Every recipe feels familiar, comforting and yet new (no recipes for lasagna here!) and I feel like the book could truely add staples to a family's normal cooking rotation with its appetizing, yet un-intimidating, ingredients and cooking methods. The book is organized into seasons (which I ALWAYS find both charming and practical) and there are some wonderful sections with essential "bonus" recipes and stories about Scott's life and kitchen. Below are some samples of dishes which MAY be featured on the tasting menu - but final menu will be set 1 week before the event based on any food sensitivities and quantity of guests attending. I look forward to exploring this beautiful cookbook with you and I want to share a big thank you to Itinerant Literate Books in Park Circle for stocking it on their shelves for me to find! 1st Port Isaac Crab, Toast and MayoCool Cucumber Salad with Creme Fraiche and DillLast of the Summer Tomatoes with Toasted Sourdough and High-Note Herbs2nd Little Gem Tart with Keen's Cheddar, Spring Onions and Flat-Leaf ParsleyFennel and Parmesan GratinCornish Crab Linguine with Chilli, Lemon and Parsley3rd Lemon Sole, Herb Dressing, Watercress and Sea HerbsPorthilly Mussels, Leeks, Cider and Clotted CreamChicken with Orange, Cream and Tarragon4th Winter Citrus TartFennel Blossom Ice CreamDrinks Harlyn Elderflower CordialRose Gin CollinsAll Images are from the Sea & Shore cookbook, photographed by Kim Lightbody
