Clothing Care: A-Heart-to-Heart Roundtable and Hands-On Workshop We all have those special items in our closet that we love, but do we always treat them like we do? That beautiful silk blouse with the “dry clean only” tag that ends up going unworn, a once favorite but now ratty looking sweater destined for the donate pile, those perfect leggings that didn’t hold up so perfectly after the wash and need to be replaced - again. Loving the clothes we own and helping make them last is a big part of sustainable fashion. We’ve got the first part down, so let’s finally get a handle on the rest! Join Reed McLaren of the Sustainable Garment and bring an item or two from your closet that you want to learn how to care for, or just come and learn how to cherish those future finds. We’ll start off with a roundtable show-and-tell with historic garments from Reed’s personal collection to explore our unique clothing care experiences and examine how the value placed on our clothes and their care has declined over time. Then we’ll get our hands on the different care tools and learn how to: Brush outwear to go way beyond the sticky roll Use a comb to remove pills and rejuvenate our sweaters Repair holes in knits with the magic of needle felting Wash even those “dry clean only” delicate items like silk and cashmere Refresh to avoid overwashing Properly store items to prevent moth damage Each participant will walk away with a sustainable clothing care kit to continue some of these methods at home, including your own DIY sweater comb! Visual artist-turned-textile enthusiast Reed McLaren’s deep affection for natural materials led her to uncover the lost arts of garment grooming and clothing care. Through research of historical tools and techniques with hands-on experimentation, and the documentation of various travels and encounters in the field, she explores all aspects of how these once necessary practices can guide us toward a more sustainable modern age.
