DARIEN, IL — Darien just saw the highest weekly total of new coronavirus cases since the pandemic's beginning, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, Darien had seen 2,605 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 173 in the last week. The week before last, the city experienced 84 new cases. The previous record was 125 new cases in November 2020. The city's number of coronavirus deaths increased by one in the last week, to 30. The deaths work out to about a thousandth of Darien's population. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. The figure compares to 137 in DuPage County, 140 in Hinsdale and La Grange, 143 in La Grange Park, 145 in Elmhurst, 149 in suburban Cook County, 152 in Clarendon Hills and 159 in Western Springs. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 2,149,548, a 6.3 percent increase from the previous week, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 27,821. Nationally, 53.8 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, a 4.3 percent increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 820,355 people have died from the virus in the United States.
