• Many people with no understanding of history or the constitution are the loudest proponents of what they believe it to say. The 2nd Amendment was written in a time when we were an occupied nation. King George through blockades forbade the import of weapons. We had no armed forces, no state, city or county police, no national law enforcement agencies, no national guard. NOTHING. In today's day when we have all of that, clearly, we no longer have need of a "well armed militia." In reality, the personal "rights of the people" are centered in the "well armed militia." • Statistics don't lie. They can be bent or manipulated, but in general, they just are what they are, like it or not. Statistics demonstrate that the simple act of owning a handgun makes you seven times more likely that you or someone you love die from gun violence, over the converse, those who are not gun owners. • My personal point of view is that the public has a right to defend themselves from great bodily harm by any means necessary. For those of us who have been at war, we know what the threat of great bodily harm looks and feels like. I am not certain, however, that a drugged up, probably mentally ill female trying to steal your stuff represents "threat of great bodily harm." • I fully understand on both sides of this issue are extremely loud, vociferous folk, unwilling to budge. From the "gun nut" to those advocating no gun ownership for civilians. So, what we have got is the extremists in control of the gun manufacturers, and a situation every time the cry is declared "They are going to steal your guns!" the gun manufacturers make another billion, our streets become flooded with lost or stolen guns. Or guns are sold to nations that don't have access to clean water, but all the guns they want, guns that are often used against our children who are called to go to these nations on peace making missions. There has to be some middle ground. Hand wringing over these issues have not served us well the last 50 years. My opinion only.
