As we near the one year anniversary of one of the grimmest days in American history, the insurrection on our Capitol, we should pause to recall how we got there. Trump and Giuliani incited that crowd by holding a rally and repeating the Big Lie that the election was stolen. Trump’s close allies including Mark Meadows deluded Trump into believing he could maintain power, like a banana Republic dictator. And the lazy and thoughtless Trump was only too willing to go along. Those who were arrested and charged with taking part in that horrible assault on our democracy have hopefully come to realize that supporting Trump was a huge mistake, that Trump is, and was, nothing but an empty suit with no ideas of his own who was simply molded by the winds of his party and who fooled millions into believing his racist and hater rhetoric. And when those same people who have been charged are convicted go to federal prison, where will Trump be? He’ll be laughing his fat ass off in disbelief that so many suckers actually bought into his empty promises and lies and contributed so much money to his sham causes and foundations. They will learn, as Trump surely has, that you can fool some of the people all the time.
