A rare opportunity to hear two thrilling ensembles by Beethoven and Mendelssohn
Beethoven: Septet in Eb Major, Opus 20
violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, horn, and bassoon
Mendelssohn: Octet in Eb Major, Opus 20
4 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos
These exciting pieces ushered in classical music’s Romantic Period with panache. Beethoven’s Septet was enormously popular and remains, arguably, the finest septet ever written. Mendelssohn’s Octet, composed at age 16, is a masterwork. Music critic Conrad Wilson wrote "Its youthful verve, brilliance and perfection make it one of the miracles of nineteenth-century music."
