FLORIDA — As the Sunshine State rings in the new year Friday night, COVID-19 continues to surge.
Florida reported another 75,962 new coronavirus cases Friday, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This number smashes the state's record for single-day reporting of cases for the fifth time this week.
The Florida Department of Health also released its weekly COVID-19 Weekly Situation Report Friday afternoon.
FDOH data shows 298,455 new cases and a new case positivity rate of 26.5 percent reported in Florida from Dec. 24-30.
Southeast Florida has seen the biggest jump in cases, according to FDOH. Broward County added 48,018 new cases during this period and saw a 31.7 new case positivity rate. There were also 98,437 new cases and a 27.3 percent new case positivity rate reported nearby in Miami-Dade County. And Palm Beach County saw 24,488 new cases and a 30.6 percent new case positivity rate.
Meanwhile, hospitalizations related to COVID-19 continue to increase in Florida. According to the Florida Hospital Association, there were 4,485 coronavirus-related hospitalizations confirmed statewide Friday. Just five days earlier, on Monday, there were only 2,019 hospitalizations.
