New Year's Eve: Where To Get A Free Ride In Austin

AUSTIN, TX — If you're planning to celebrate the new year with a little too much bubbly, don't get behind the wheel. Instead, take advantage of Capital Metro's free rides. This year, Cap Metro will offer free rides after 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve for riders who plan to ring in the new year with a few drinks. The free rides will be available for all transit services. The transit agency will offer its night owl services on Friday, which will provide rides until 3 a.m. Buses run between popular late-night destinations on 6th Street and local neighborhoods every 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the route. Here are the Night Owl routes: Night Owl CameronRoute481 Night Owl North LamarRoute483 Night Owl RiversideRoute484 Night Owl South LamarRoute486 Night Owl South CongressRoute You can also ride MetroRail, MetroRapid or the local MetroBus to get to and from your destination. These regular services end earlier than the Night Owl routes. MetroRail: operates between downtown and Leander until after midnightMetroRapid: service runs until about midnight, 7 days a week, with service at least every 20 minutes. Route 801 runs between Tech Ridge and Southpark Meadows, and Route 803 runs between The Domain and Westgate.MetroBus operates throughout the city. Service ends between 10 p.m. and midnight, depending on the route. On Sunday, Jan. 1, Capital Metro will observe the holiday and not offer MetroRail, Pickup, UT Shuttle, Night Owl, E-Bus or MetroExpress service. Get a free tow home through AAA AAA Texas offers a free tow home -- up to 10 miles -- from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 through 6 a.m. Jan. 1 in Texas as a part of the Holiday Safe Ride Program. Texans who need a tow home should call 800-222-4357. The service is available to members and nonmembers.
