NORTHBROOK, IL — Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise across the country. In Northbrook, police received reports of thefts at six locations in Northbrook's commercial business district over the course of Dec. 20 through Dec. 26. In total, 32 converters were reported stolen throughout the various locations.
Police said they are increasing patrols in business areas and are asking residents to be diligent.
Over the last week and a half, according to police, the following makes/models are particularly vulnerable in the Northbrook area: work trucks, Toyota Prius, Honda Accord, Mitsubishi Outlander and Honda CR-V.
Police are recommending the following actions to help prevent catalytic converter thefts:Secure your vehicle; park in a garage or securely fenced-in area.If you cannot park in the garage, park in a well-lit area or use motion sensor lights.Always lock your vehicle and set your alarm.Use a home video system; ensure your video system at home captures where your vehicle is parked.Install an anti-theft device to the converter.Anyone with information on these thefts can contact the Northbrook Police Department at 847-564-2060. If someone sees something suspicious taking place, they are encouraged to call 911 and report the incident immediately.
