LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Laguna Beach's famed lifeguard tower in Main Beach is having a party on New Year's Day, 2022. Resident and community activist Beth Leeds has planned the celebration for Saturday at noon, she tells the OC Register. "It's a new year 2022, and I thought it would be a positive thing to tell people about how it was saved 50 years ago," she said. The tower was relocated to its current spot from a Union Gas Station across the street. The ground floor has been both a first aid station and storage location, while the upper deck remained designated for lifeguards. In 1972 that the city council agreed to save the lifeguard tower, according to Leeds, who led that charge. That day, calling for a show of hands, Leeds changed the course of Laguna's legacy. This year, the visage of the lifeguard tower was turned into a Christmas ornament, to help raise funds for another Laguna Beach staple, the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.
