Press release from San Diego County Sheriff's Department: 12/30/2021 10:02 AM On December 29, 2021, at about 7:00 p.m., deputies at the San Diego Central Jail were checking a housing unit. A deputy witnessed an inmate, thirty-eight-year-old Dominique James McCoy, being assaulted by another inmate, eighteen-year-old John Roman Medina, in a cell. The deputies intervened and removed Medina from the cell. McCoy was unresponsive. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed lifesaving measures until relieved by fire department personnel. McCoy was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, McCoy was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital. The Sheriff's Homicide Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. On December 23, 2021, thirty-eight-year-old Dominique James McCoy was booked into San Diego Central Jail by the San Diego Police Department for the charges of 11352(a) HS – Transportation / Sell Controlled Substance and 11377(a) HS – Possession of Narcotics. McCoy is a resident of the city of San Diego. His family has been notified of his death. On December 26, 2021, eighteen-year-old John Roman Medina was booked into San Diego Central Jail by the Chula Vista Police Department for the charges of 273A(a) PC – Felony Child Cruelty, 245(a)(1) PC – Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Not a Firearm), and 597(a) PC – Cruelty to Animals. Medina is a resident of the city of Chula Vista. As a result of the investigation, Homicide detectives determined Medina physically assaulted McCoy, which caused his death. The Medical Examiner's Office will schedule McCoy's autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of McCoy's death. Detectives rebooked Medina for the additional charge of 187(a) PC – Murder.
