NBS Summit 2022: Backcountry & Uphill Clinic Events Summary & OverviewIf you have a curiosity or passion to learn more about Uphill Skiing inside of the ski resort or Backcountry Skiing outside of the ski resort ropes, then the NBS, Scarpa, and Tele Mike will be hosting a series of backcountry and uphill ski clinics at the 2022 NBS Summit in Aspen Snowmass. All events are $Free.99 for registered NBS members and $20 for non-registered participants. Below is an overview of the Uphill & Backcountry Clinic series. Clinic Specific Details Below: Introduction to Uphill SkiingSCARPA sponsored professional athlete and competitive Uphill Ski Racer, Teague Holmes, will teach a basic awareness and understanding clinic on Uphill Skiing. Participants will learn: (1) What is Uphill Skiing (2) What equipment and clothing are needed, including hands-on demonstrations (3) How to get started in Uphill Skiing Location: SCARPA Tent in Snowmass Base Village Schedule: Please attend either of the following times. Monday, February 07, 2022 8:30AM - 9:30AM MST Wednesday, February 09, 2022 8:30AM - 9:30AM MST What To Bring: Nothing is required. Introduction to Backcountry SkiingEverest expedition leader and professional outdoor educator (NOLS) Phil Henderson will be teaching a hands-on course in backcountry safety and uphill skiing. This is a free course that will traditionally cost $300 or more to get this valuable education. This course will include a short 1.5 hour classroom discussion on day 1 of the course followed by time on the mountain to practice backcountry safety on day 2. Participants will learn: (1) How to prepare for backcountry travel, (2) How to use planning tools and checklists to facilitate communicating and making decisions to reduce risk of avalanches, (3) How to do a companion rescue. Day 1 Location: Classroom location at Snowmass Village TBD Day 1 Schedule: Monday, February 07, 2022 10:30AM - 12:00AM MST Day 1 What To Bring: Bring a mask. Otherwise thing is needed to bring for the classroom session. Day 2 Location: SCARPA Tent in Snowmass Base Village Day 2 Schedule: Monday, February 09, 2022 10:30AM - 12:00AM MST Day 2 What to Bring: Come ready to ski with all of your ski gear, lift pass, and a small backpack with a snack if possible. All other backcountry equipment will be provided to you for free. Please check back for updates on the classroom location. Uphill Challenge You will be provided with the experience to participate in Uphill Skiing on the same day as the NBS ski races. SCARPA, 22Designs, and other vendors will provide free demo skis, bindings, boots, and skins to participate in this event. The Uphill Challenge will be timed. Top finishers will receive prizes. If you can walk 1/2 a mile then this fun challenge is for you! Additional Registration Required: You must go to the NBS Race Registration EventBrite site to specifically participate in the Uphill Challenge. If you have not registered with the NBS for the Summit, then you only need to pay the $20 participation fee once if you will participate in the Uphill Challenge and Backcountry Events. Skiers Only At This Time: At this time, this event is for skiers only, unless you have your own Splitboard Snowboard to participate. We are working on getting a Backcountry Spitboard Vendor to provide free Spitboard demos for snowboarders. Stay tuned! Participants will learn how to: 1. Get in and out of AT or Telemark Backcountry boots and skis. 2. Apply and remove climbing skins for walking uphill. 3. Walk (skin) uphill. 4. Transition from climbing skin mode to ski mode and back. Schedule: Tuesday, February 08, 2022, Come anytime between 10:00AM - 2:00PM MST Location: Check-In at SCARPA Tent at bottom of Spider Sabich Race Arena What to Bring: A small bottle of water. Otherwise, you will ski to the SCARPA Tent at the bottom of Spider Sabich Race Arena. There you will be provided with all of the Uphill ski equipment by the backcountry vendors as well as instructions and plenty of assistance on how to ski up the hill, transition, and ski down the hill. The course will be the approximate distance of the NASTAR race course. SCARPA & 22Designs Telemark Ski ClinicHave you ever wanted to try Telemark Skiing? Tele Mike & Tele Shane will be teaching a Telemark Ski Clinic. Scarpa and 22Designs will provide free demo telemark boots, bindings, and skis. “Free the heel! Free the mind!” Participants will learn the following: 1. How to get in and out of Telemark gear. 2. How to make Tele-pine turns 3. How to make Telemark turns Location: SCARPA Tent in Snowmass Base Village Schedule: Please attend one or both of the following times. Monday, February 07, 2022 1:30AM - 3:30AM MST Wednesday, February 09, 2022 1:30AM - 3:30AM MST What To Bring: Come dressed and ready to ski along with your lift ticket and Ski Poles. SCARPA will supply the Telemark Boots, Bindings, and Skis. Aspen Highlands Bowl Bootpack Hike & Ski/Snowboard with ScarpaTele Mike and Scarpa will be guiding a day of bootpack hiking, skiing, and riding in the Highlands Bowl Sidecountry. This involves a 45 minute bootpack hike up the highlands bowl. This will be a great experience to apply the lessons learned from both of the Introduction to Uphill and Backcountry clinics. There is a magnificent view of the Maroon Bells at the top of the Highlands Bowl followed by flip side fresh tracks on the way down! Let’s go get it!!! Participants will learn the following: 1. How to use the AIARE Framework (American Institute for Avalanche Research & Education) to successfully plan and ski/ride the resort side country gates. Location: Aspen Highlands Village bottom of the Exhibition Lift Schedule: Thursday, February 10, 2022, 9:00AM - 12:00AM MST What To Bring: Bring a backpack or harness that can carry your skis or snowboard. Snacks. Small bottle of water. Also bring all of your normal ski or snowboarding equipment as well as your lift pass for the day.
