University of Iowa Merit Badge University - March 5th, 2022   This sign-up is for Troop 42 members only.  Scouters from other troops can get more information from the Hawkeyebsa.org calendar.   The University of Iowa Merit Badge University is being held on Saturday, March 5th from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM and is a great opportunity for Scouts to work on merit badges in a focused, group setting. Some badges can be completed in a day, while some will require additional outside work. These sessions can offer Scouts an opportunity to work on some merit badges not typically offered in the troop or at summer camp. Mr. Nolte is coordinating this event so contact him with any questions by email at: [email protected]. Troop 42 Scouts are invited to sign-up for this MBU by registering on this Eventbrite page.   Here is a listing of the merit badges offered at this MBU (as of 12/30): Art (All Day)Chemistry (AM)Chemistry (PM)Chess (All Day; prereq - know how to play, read pamphlet)Citizenship in the Nation* (All Day; prereq - #3)Citizenship in the World* (All Day; prereq - #3)Energy (AM; prereq - #s 4 & 6)Energy (PM; prereq - #s 4 & 6)Engineering (All Day)Fingerprinting (AM)Fingerprinting (PM)First Aid* (All Day)Law (All Day; prereq - #4)Music (All Day; prereq - #3b)Personal Management* (All Day; prereq - #s 1, 2, 8abc, & 10)Radio (All Day)Search and Rescue (AM)Search and Rescue (PM)Space Exploration (All Day; prereq - launch a rocket) * indicates Eagle required MB.   The cost for each session is $10 - even for all day sessions. Scouts may select up to 2 half day merit badges (1 in the morning and/or 1 in the afternoon) or 1 all day merit badge. Though, Scouts may only sign up for 1 Eagle required merit badge. Scouts are invited to sign-up for the merit badges that interest them, but Art, Chess, & Fingerprinting are good merit badges for 1st and 2nd year Scouts because they have few or no prerequisites and almost always get completed at the MBU. Scouts should specify their top 3 choices and enter the merit badge names in order of preference in the Eventbrite registration page. Some merit badges have prerequisites that must be completed and brought to the MBU. Scouts will need to bring proof of completion of the prerequisites to the MBU.   Mr. Nolte will login and attempt to secure your spot as soon as you register on Eventbrite but it isn’t official until you have funds in your account to cover the fees. All merit badge sessions cost $10 each whether they are half day or all day. Please review the merit badge information carefully for details and prerequisites. The deadline for sign-up is Monday, Feb 14th, and you must have funds in your Scout account by this date, to cover your registration. The meeting on Feb 14th is a regular troop meeting, so you can drop off a check if you'd like. Questions about your Scout account can be emailed to [email protected].   Lunch will be on your own and there are many restaurants in the area.  You may bring your own sack lunch, too.   Depending upon how many Scouts sign-up for this MBU, we may be able to take the troop bus.  As we get closer to the date and the attendance is closer to being finalized, additional details will be sent out. The MBU sessions are located in multiple buildings on the U of I campus and so Mr. Nolte will need help from adults to provide two-deep leadership and make sure Scouts get to where they need to be.   Seats are limited and some fill up fast!  Sign up now - don’t miss this opportunity!
