PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — As coronavirus cases driven by the omicron variant surge across the city, rates in Park Slope have more than tripled in the last few weeks, according to city data. Coronavirus positivity averages in Park Slope's major ZIP code, 11215, spiked dramatically, jumping from 3.56 percent the week ending Dec. 11 to 13.45 percent as of Christmas Day, city data shows. The spike comes as hundreds of cases were detected in ZIP code, including 823 new cases last week. But despite the surge, the neighborhood is still better off than the majority of New York City, where neighborhood-level coronavirus rates have reached as high as 28.84 percent. Only eight ZIP codes across the five boroughs had a lower seven-day average than Park Slope's 11215 as of Christmas, the most recent week in city data. The 11217 ZIP code, which covers Boerum Hill and a northern slice of Park Slope, was also relatively low with a coronavirus rate just above 15 percent, data shows. The citywide surge comes after an unprecedented number of New Yorkers sought out coronavirus tests given omicron's spread and the upcoming holidays. Last week, the city was testing 170,000 people per day, significantly higher than its previous record of 120,000 tests in a single day. New York state broke its new positive COVID case count record three days in a row the week before Christmas, including 22,478 people testing positive that Sunday — 12,404 of which who live in New York City, according to data. The New York City daily case count had risen to nearly double that as of Wednesday, when there were 21,846 new cases detected, according to the Mayor's Office.
