VIENNA, VA — Vienna will lose a COVID-19 testing location due to an emergency zoning allowance not being permitted beyond Dec. 31, 2021. The Personic Health Care testing site has been located at Emmaus United Church of Christ, 900 Maple Avenue East. Normally, this use at a church property would not be permitted under the town code. The Town Council had adopted a number of emergency zoning exceptions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The council had authorized the testing site under an emergency use provision at the point in the pandemic when vaccines were not available and testing sites were few. But since the Virginia state of emergency expired at the end of June, Vienna's emergency use provision expires six months later on Dec. 31. The Personic testing site will be closed after Dec. 31. "There have been no requests from the testing company at the emergency Maple Ave. location to operate in another location that would comply with the Town Code," said the Town of Vienna in a news release. "The Vienna Town Council and staff will continue to carefully monitor the public health situation and consult with local and state public health officials to determine if additional resources are needed."
