SILVER SPRING, MD — One person was injured by a gunshot and a suspect in the shooting is dead after Montgomery County Police say the man shot at police, who returned fire. No police officers were hurt.
Authorities said a shooting was reported about 4:15 a.m. in the 900 block of Bonifant Street in Silver Spring. A man suffering from a gunshot wound was taken to an area hospital.
A lookout for the suspect's white Mercedes Benz was broadcast and officers spotted the vehicle. When police stopped the Mercedes at the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Dartmouth Avenue, a person in the vehicle stepped out and fired at police, authorities said.
"Officers returned fire. The individual who was shooting at the officers was struck and has succumbed from his injuries as a result of being shot," Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones said during a morning news conference, WTOP reported.
The four officers involved in the shooting have all been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation, Jones said. It is not known how many officers fired shots.
WTOP reports the victim in the Bonifant Street shooting and the shooter knew each other.
Police have not released the name of the man who was killed.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General Independent Investigation Division will investigate the officers' actions in the shooting.
