AUSTIN, TX — Funeral services for former Austin mayor Bruce Todd have been set for January. Todd, who served the city in the 90's, died on Christmas Day at 72-years-old. The public funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Jan. 6 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3003 Northland Drive, in Austin. His committal service, also open to the public, is set for 3:30 p.m. at Texas State Cemetery, 909 Navasota St., in Austin. Todd died from complications of Lewy Body Dementia on Christmas Day. He served as Austin's mayor from 1991-1997, after previously serving on the Travis County Commissioners Court from 1987-1991. Mayor Bruce Todd was one of our generation's greatest local public servants. He did so much in so many different roles. I'll personally miss his kindness and support. Today, Austin and Travis County are embracing Elizabeth and celebrating Mayor Todd.— Mayor Adler | Get vaccinated! (@MayorAdler) December 25, 2021 As a county commissioner, Todd helped create the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Preserve, the largest urban preserve in the country at the time. As Austin's mayor, he helped turn Bergstrom U.S. Air Force Base into what's now Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Todd also oversaw hot button issues like early growth in the city and the transfer of then city-run Brackenridge Hospital to Seton. He retired from the office "undefeated and unindicted," as he was often quoted saying to friends and family. From there, he moved to a consulting firm, but never stopped advocating and working with local government. I had the pleasure of first mtg Mayor Bruce Todd around 1992 after joining as a staffer to then CM Gus García. Mayor Todd was a leader, a true public servant, kind & had a wonderful sense of humor. I know Mayor Todd & Mayor García are having a wonderful conversation tonight. He never inserted his opinions on issues but he would offer the guidance and support of a friend. He was a role model for the modern American mayor. I will miss my friend," said former Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell. Mayor Steve Adler took to Twitter on Christmas Day praising Todd as "one of our generation's greatest local public servants." "He did so much in so many different roles. I'll personally miss his kindness and support. Today, Austin and Travis County are embracing Elizabeth and celebrating Mayor Todd," Adler said. Todd is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Christian, his son Jeremy Todd and his stepdaughter Alexandra Rose. See how others remembered Todd below. As Mayor, as County Commissioner, as concerned citizen, Bruce Todd made an invaluable contribution to our community. He played a major role in our airport, Balcones Preserve & in making ATX a major technology hub. pic.twitter.com/GAuAJ0LAtM— Lloyd Doggett (@RepLloydDoggett) December 26, 2021 Former Austin Mayor Bruce Todd (front right), who passed away today, in South Africa in March 2020.
