JERSEY CITY, NJ —The Jersey City school district has announced that public schools will be remote this coming week, returning in person on Jan. 10. "The district's decision to temporarily switch to virtual learning is difficult," stated a message from the district. "Still, the administration and the board are mindful of the health and well-being of our students, staff, and community." They said students can pick up breakfast and lunch at 20 sites between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. starting Tuesday. "Additional information will be forthcoming abouttesting to stay and vaccination opportunities," they wrote. "We will reevaluate the COVID-19 positivity rates within our school community and determine the following steps to return to in-person instruction." Several nearby schools have announced that they will start the new year remote, including Hoboken, which will be remote from this coming Monday through Wednesday. Others are starting with early dismissal days. The easily transmissible omicron variant is causing cases to ramp up, and the delta variant is still in play and is still causing hospitalizations and deaths. In New Jersey right now, four hospital emergency rooms (including some pediatric) are on "divert status" due either to patient volume or staff being out sick.
