JOLIET, IL — A woman and two children safely escaped from a far west side house in the 1900 block of Arbor Fields Drive after a man who lives there began shooting up his television set, according to Joliet police.
Wednesday's shooting happened around 2:10 a.m. in the Plainfield mailing area of Joliet. Joliet police arrested 34-year-old Israel Torres, who lives at the house. The Will County State's Attorney's Office of Jim Glasgow has charged Torres with five counts of reckless discharge of a gun, one count of domestic battery and four counts of endangering the life or health of a child.
Torres was let out of the Will County Jail around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, after posting 10 percent of his $50,000 bail, jail logs show.
After Joliet police responded to the overnight call on Arbor Fields Drive, "officers learned that a firearm may be involved in the disturbance. Gunfire from within the residence was heard by officers as they approached the home," Joliet Police Sgt. Dwayne English indicated.
Joliet officers went into the house to evacuate a woman and two children who were still inside, police reports show.
"It was determined that Torres was in the residence and had fired rounds into a television with a 9 mm handgun," English stated. "Officers encountered Torres, who was now unarmed, in the residence and placed him into custody without incident."
Joliet police said the gun was recovered from the house, and officers later learned that Torres had attacked the woman during an argument that preceded the arrival of officers.
