Description

Press release from the City of Elgin: December 29, 2021 Canadian Pacific Railway recently submitted an application to acquire Kansas City Southern rail network. This potential acquisition would join the northern and southern US into one system that reduces the number of train reconfigurations in railyards. If the merger is approved, the potential impact on Elgin would result in approximately eight additional freight trains traveling through the city per day. As part of the application process, the federal Surface Transportation Board (STB) is accepting public input through January 3, 2022. The City of Elgin encourages the public to participate by submitting comments regarding the potential acquisition and future impact on Elgin. Submit comments here. The City is in discussions with neighboring communities that would also be impacted by the acquisition and has submitted public comments related to the potential impact of the additional freight train traffic. The City's official public comments were submitted to the STB in form of an environmental impact statement (EIS) which can be viewed here.  Additional updates will be provided to the community throughout the STB review process.  This press release was produced by the City of Elgin.
