SALEM, MA — A Salem apartment fire sent heavy smoke into the air, closed down Boston Street and left dozens of residents displaced Tuesday night. The fire began about 7 p.m. and reached three alarms. Salem fire officials told WCVB-TV that they believe the fire started on the third floor of what was described as an "older apartment building." The station said the cause of the fire was under investigation. No injuries were reported. Those displaced were able to keep warm in an MBTA bus during the chilly December night. The American Red Cross was assisting those who could not return to their apartments on Wednesday.
