Morning, people of Sacramento! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Sacramento Daily. First, today's weather: Cloudy, a little rain; cold. High: 44 Low: 33. Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento: Sacramento Regional Transit has extended its "Free ride to get your vaccine" program. The program, which allows riders to use confirmation of a COVID-19 vaccine appointment as a valid fare to get to that appointment, will now run through March 31, 2022. The Sacramento County Department of Health Services provides a list of vaccination sites in the county and appointment resources on its website. (ABC10)After more than a year of well-below average water levels at Folsom Lake, the Bureau of Reclamation started making releases from that reservoir early Tuesday morning. The releases are necessary because the water level is now near the maximum allowed at this time of year for flood protection. What a difference a few storms make! Releases will be small this week and will only have a minor impact on the American River downstream to Sacramento. (KCRA3)Some of you may have seen this in my notebook yesterday, but I wanted to make sure everyone saw it. The city of Sacramento has canceled its New Year's Eve Sky Spectacular fireworks event that was planned along the Old Sacramento Waterfront due to rising COVID-19 cases of the omicron variant. "On the advice of public health officials, the City of Sacramento has made the difficult decision to cancel the New Year's Eve Sky Spectacular on the Old Sacramento Waterfront due to the recent spread of the Omicron variant," the city said in a statement. "We are hopeful for safer opportunities to gather in large groups in 2022." (KCRA3) The Miss Black Sacramento and Miss Black Teen Scholarship Pageant was held last week, showcasing some of the area's best and brightest young ladies. Aryanna Lewis, a local 25-year-old who started a non-profit to mentor youth, was crowned Miss Black Sacramento. Kimiah Jacobs, a senior at Rocklin High School, was crowned Miss Black Teen Sacramento. (Sacramento Observer) I'm jumping over to the next county for this one, but it's a big enough milestone that I bet you'll forgive me. Happy birthday to Ron Scott, from Rocklin, who turned 105 on Monday! He has lived to see two pandemics. I hope I can never say the same thing...
