GLEN ELLYN, IL — As of Tuesday, the weekly total number of active coronavirus cases in Glen Ellyn had nearly doubled over the previous week, according to data from DuPage County Health Department (DCHD).
The spike comes amid a surge in omicron and delta variant cases throughout the United States.
From Dec. 14 to Dec. 21, Glen Ellyn reported 249 active coronavirus cases (206 confirmed, 43 probable). From Dec. 21 to Dec. 28, the village saw 418 active coronavirus cases (335 confirmed, 83 probable), per DCHD.
On Monday, Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike urged caution ahead of New Year's Eve. Ezike said in a news conference, "Every single event being held during this holiday season will have one or two uninvited, unwanted guests: delta, and/or omicron. One or both could be there."
She continued, urging residents to get their coronavirus booster shots, saying, "[H]ow we entertain that guest depends on us. If everyone's wearing masks, you may not have to take that virus home. If you are boosted, you have a much lower, lower chance of being significantly ill."
