Plummer was assigned to the Engine 94 firehouse, 5758 W. Grace St. in the Portage Park neighborhood. He had just observed his first anniversary as a firefighter/EMT in December. He will receive a funeral steeped in the ceremony and traditions of the Chicago Fire Department, reserved for those who die in the line of duty. Visitation will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Leak and Sons Funeral Home, 7838 S. Cottage Grove. Members of the Chicago Fire Department and from other fire departments will assemble in front of the funeral home at 6:45 p.m., with a walk-thru planned at 7 p.m. The walk-through is a formal ceremony when firefighters file single file past the casket. Each firefighter pauses briefly in front of the casket in a show of respect for the fallen firefighter. The funeral is set for 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at House of Hope, a 10,000-seat worship place at 752- E. 114th St. Immediately following the service, Plummer's body will receive an honorary procession to Oak Woods Cemetery, 1035 E. 67th St. "I encourage all members of the Fire Department to join me in paying our respects," CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said in a department memo. "I further encourage all off-duty members to attend and participate in the funeral." Plummer, who was not married, is survived by his parents and four sisters.
