BATAVIA, IL — With demands for testing and cases of COVID-19 increasing, volunteers are needed to help staff facilities. In Kane County, the health department is looking for people to provide vaccines to the community at Kane Vax Hub. In order to help at the site, located at 501 N. Randall Road, volunteers would join the Medical research Reserve Corps. Whether medically trained or not, people can still help in varying ways. Medical volunteers would provide shots at clinics, while non-medical volunteers would help in supporting roles, which can include symptom triage, greeting, registration and distribution, medical screening, flow monitoring, vaccine checkout and data entering. Currently, officials said the greatest need is volunteers with medical backgrounds or approved licenses. Medical volunteers — including nursing students, dentists, pharmacists, paramedics, registered nurses, emergency medical technicians and licensed practical nurses —are required to have a current license to practice. Non-medical volunteers should be good at working with people and adept at providing customer service, Kane County Health Department officials said in a news release. People who decide they want to help the community have the option to volunteer as frequently as they want, since there is no minimum commitment required. Officials said people speaking more than one language would be welcome, and the greatest need is for Spanish and Hindi speakers. To apply, people can visit this website and click on the "Kane County MRC volunteer" banner at the top of the page. Anyone interested can also call the Kane County Health Department at 630-208-3801. Once the application has been submitted, officials said medical volunteers "must complete vaccination training online and successfully complete a vaccination competency checklist," the news release reads. "All volunteers receive just-in-time training on their first shift at the vaccination clinics."
