Here are the top 3 stories in Atlanta today: As the Omicron variant surges through Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp has announced the deployment of the National Guard to assist hospitals and COVID-19 test sites across the state beginning Monday, Jan. 3. Kemp's decision comes as Georgia broke its case record for the second time this week, reaching 13,834 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday afternoon. The Governor emphasized that he will not implement any measures that could force businesses to close or separate residents by vaccination status or mask-wearing preference.(Atlanta Patch)On Jan. 9, the Keep Atlanta Beautiful Commission and Atlanta's Department of Public Works will be collecting live, plain Christmas trees at the Buckhead, Cascade, and Midtown Home Depot locations in Atlanta. While supplies last, residents will receive a free tree seedling or a garden seed packet as a "thank you" for recycling their tree. Event organizers remind Atlanta residents to remove all tinsel, lights, decorations, tree stands, and plastic bags from Christmas trees before drop-off. (Atlanta Journal Constitution) Thanks to MARTA's Greater Atlanta Transit-Oriented Affordable Housing Preservation Fund, the historic GE Towers lofts at 490 Glenn St. will be renovated into affordable housing. The financing allowed Lincoln Avenue Capital to acquire GE Towers and preserve 201 affordable units within a 10-minute walk from MARTA's West End rail station. Lincoln Avenue Capital plans to rehabilitate the property through a tax credit execution in 2022, which will extend its long-term affordability.
