WHY this is an important topic?
• Professionals need to be knowledgeable of the intricacies and guidelines surrounding being a court involved therapist to avoid pitfalls and polarization;
• Ordering therapy alone is not beneficial to families, court orders must support therapy by not bringing the legal process into the therapy room;
• Clearly defining boundaries, and not crossing those boundaries maximizes the effectiveness of therapy;
• Dodging attempts to put you in a position to make recommendations outside of your scope, helps protect the therapeutic process
• Practicing professional courtesy by not requesting recommendations from a professional when such would be outside of the scope of his/her role, allows for the best opportunity for collaboration of court involved professionals.
