I Wonder If My Bees Know They're Black is a solo exhibition featuring the work of social practice artist + curator Janelle Dunlap
For artist and beekeeper, Janelle Dunlap, Beekeeping is a meditation on collective effort for survival. Through her beekeeping practice Janelle has developed a signature line of encaustic paints in which encaustic painting becomes her medium of expression for the complex realities of climate change in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through Abstract Expressionism's cerebral nature, her art attempts to work through these complexities to decode messages from the natural world.
Block House Gallery located in the PullmanArts Center in Chicago, IL is located in the historic south side community of Pullman. PullmanArts builds upon the historic beauty, artistry and skilled craftsmanship that was synonymous with the name Pullman. In partnership with Artspace, Inc. and Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, we re-purposed historic structures as artist live/work spaces. Within this new development, PullmanArts created it’s new home, The Block House Gallery, which is the only community-run gallery to serve the South Side of Chicago. Toward this end, we partner with a wide variety of organizations to bolster Pullman’s historic and contemporary reputation as an arts hub.
