FRAMINGHAM, MA — Local residents will mark the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot with candlelight vigils. Locally, two rallies are planned in Framingham and Worcester. Supporters of former president Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol one year ago as members of Congress were voting to certify the election of President Joe Biden. Hundreds of people have been arrests and prosecuted since, including residents from Natick, Seekonk, Somerville and Malden. "Americans across race, place, party, and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In America, the voters decide the outcome of elections," a Massachusetts Standing Up for Racial Justice press release said. "To prevent this kind of attack from happening again, advocates are demanding that elected leaders pass urgent legislation including the Freedom to Vote Act, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and DC Statehood." The Framingham rally will take place beginning at 6 p.m. on Jan. 6 at the intersection of Routes 126 and 135 (Irving and Waverly streets). The Worcester rally will begin at noon on Jan. 6 at Institute Park. More Jan. 6 rallies are being planned in the Boston and Springfield areas. Find details about other events across the region here.
