NORTHBROOK, IL — With holiday gatherings and the emerging omicron surge of coronavirus combining to send demand for tests skyrocketing past supplies, an increasing number of North Shore residents have been seeking COVID-19 testing but have found it unavailable or difficult to obtain. COVID-19 test positivity in suburban Cook County rose to 7.8 percent, as of Monday, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health. There were nearly 240,000 tests performed in the county during the week ending Dec. 18, according to the most recent data available from the Illinois Department of Public Health. In Northbrook, there were 162 new cases reported for the week, with a 202 percent increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases over the last 14 days. The village's weekly case rate is 460 per 100,000 people — lower than the suburban Cook County average of 548. According to the Cook County Department of Public Health, the vaccination rate in the village is more than 90 percent. Since the start of the pandemic, 133 Northbrook residents have died of COVID-19 — with the most recent death on Dec. 22, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
