Rain Storm Damage To Monrovia Canyon Park Estimated At $10M

MONROVIA, CA — It could cost the city $10 million to repair the damage caused by Dec. 14's rainstorm to Monrovia Canyon Park. Some of the repair work includes removing debris that was strewn about the park and fixing the park's infrastructure, Monrovia officials said. The park suffered "significant damage" to its roads, utility systems, parking area, trails and facilities as a result of a debris flow caused by the rain, city officials said. The park's running water for its bathrooms and drinking fountains was compromised by the debris flow, Monrovia officials said. Rocks, some as large as a car, were also strewn about the area from the rainstorm. Some areas of the park have also experienced as much as 12 feet of soil erosion. The park will remain closed indefinitely as the city repairs the damage from the storm. Despite the damage to the park, the nearby homes on Ridgeside and Oakglade drives went through the storm unscathed, officials said.
