ELMHURST, IL — Seventeen catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles early one morning last week at a north Elmhurst business, police said. Officers stopped two suspects they say may be connected to the thefts.
About 1 a.m. Thursday, officers pulled over a car they deemed suspicious. The suspects were found to have multiple Sawzall blades and significant amounts of metal shavings on the floor of the rear of their silver Infiniti, police said.
Nearby, officers found 17 catalytic converters were removed from vehicles in the lot at Trans Chicago Trucking, 776 N. York St., police said. An investigation is pending.
Seven other converters were stolen in recent days at Elmhurst businesses. Here is information from police reports:
Two converters were removed from a white Chevrolet box truck about 10:30 p.m. Dec. 21 at Chicago Water & Water Restoration, 720 N. Larch Ave. The suspects were in a black Audi. A converter was removed from a white Ford Ecoline bus between 11 a.m. Dec. 15 and 4 p.m. Dec. 16 at Park Place of Elmhurst, 1050 S. Euclid Ave. A converter was removed from an orange Ford Ecoline bus between Dec. 11 and Dec. 14 at Classic Graphic Industries, 650 W. Grand Ave. While patrolling a parking lot at Chicago Water & Fire Restoration, an officer found a truck with a missing catalytic converter. The theft happened between 11 a.m. Wednesday and 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Two catalytic converters were removed from a white Isuzu truck between 2 p.m. Dec. 20 and 7 a.m. Dec. 23 at Morfin Construction, 730 N. Larch Ave.
