UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A major fire broke out in an Upper West Side public housing complex Tuesday morning, sending seven people to the hospital, three with serious injuries, according to the FDNY. The blaze broke out in a trash machine on the 10th floor of the Wise Towers at 133 West 90th Street (between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues) about 6:15 a.m., FDNY said. A firefighter and three residents sustained minor injuries which an FDNY spokesperson was unable to specify to Patch. Smoke billowed through multiple floors of the building and but more than 100 firefighters were able to get the fire under control by about 7:20 a.m., FDNY said. The FDNY also reported that one elevator wasn't working upon their arrival at the building. Another elevator stopped working while they were within the building — but FDNY didn't specify it was the flames that caused it to stop operating. The building is part of the Wise Towers NYCHA complex that is made up of multiple buildings on West 90th and 91st Streets. An image of 133 West 90th Street.
