Description

NORTH SEA, NY — A shooting that left a man dead in his home on Christmas morning is believed to have been targeted, police said. Suffolk County Police said the incident was a burglary, not a home invasion, as first reported — and that it was targeted, and not a random act. Earlier this week, police identified the man killed as Steven Byrnes. According to Suffolk County Police, Byrnes, 53, of Roses Grove Road, was found dead of a gunshot wound in his home at 8:45 a.m. Southampton Town Police responded to a 911 call regarding a burglary at the home and found him, officials said. Byrnes was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact the homicide squad at 631-852-6392 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
