Here are the top 4 stories today in Atlanta: Parts of Georgia will be a severe storm watch today (Dec. 29) as rain and wind pass through the area later in the day. Metro Atlanta will see a level 1 risk for damaging wind gusts, brief tornadoes, and heavy rain. (WSB Atlanta) Early Tuesday morning, a local UPS driver was tied up and kidnapped in a package theft heist, according to the Atlanta Police Department. The driver was stopped at a red light when someone with a gun got inside the truck and forced him to drive to another location. The suspect and other individuals tied up the driver and left him in the vehicle as they stole the truck's cargo. The delivery company tracked the truck to the Bankhead Ct. area and police found the driver inside uninjured. (News & Observer)Rising COVID-19 cases have once again canceled Atlanta's beloved New Year's Eve Peach Drop. This is the third year in a row without the city's New Year tradition, as the event was put on hold in 2019 with the goal of finding a better location. "While we are saddened to miss this year's party and musical acts, we are very excited to bring the Peach Drop back next year and better than ever," said Underground Atlanta officials on social media. (Atlanta Patch) Atlanta Police is planning to step up security for New Year's Eve with more uniformed and undercover plainclothes officers who can better assist in emergency situations. Due to the increased police presence, APD is asking residents to be mindful of potential traffic congestion around downtown Atlanta. Deputy Chief Carven Tyus encouraged those celebrating in town to use MARTA trains or rideshare services to reduce traffic.
