Book idea help?

I am currently trying to write my first book and I am so lost. I have a plot idea... but just the beginning panned out. The plot is about a little girl and her mother who are abused by their father/husband. He is verbally, mentally, and physically abusive. I only have the first chapter planned. I want the plot to be around 2003, summer. But I love the ideas of memoirs which would change the year I want it plotted. Though, whatever idea I go with; either memoir or 2003 living in the moment type of story..., I can't figure out the ending. I want the ending to be bittersweet but I don't know how to do that. I have the idea of the father going to jail and the mother and daughter being mentally scarred but I'm so so about it. Any advice would be much appreciated!!!!
