EAST GARDEN CITY, NY — Carvana is building a customer center on land the online used car retailer bought in town, according to Newsday. The Tempe, Arizona-based company is preparing to construct a 6,540-square-foot building with an accompanying auto storage tower on 1.9 acres at 2 North Ave., abutting a Whole Foods at 867 E. Gate Blvd., Newsday reports. Carvana paid $9.7 million for the property, a price that exceeds the new $5.1 million per acre benchmark for industrial land on Long Island, according to Long Island Business News. The Town of Hempstead approved Carvana's plan for the customer center in August and issued a building permit for the industrial-zoned site in November, Newsday reports. The property is located directly across North Avenue from two hotels, Hampton Inn and Hyatt Place. Carvana pursued the property for its close proximity to the Meadowbrook Parkway, Old Country Road and Roosevelt Field Mall, a representative for the seller said in a statement.
