MILLBRAE, CA — As storms pummeled the Golden State, two people died after their vehicle became trapped in a flooded underpass in the Bay Area on Thursday, officials said.
Around 6 a.m., authorities received reports of a car submerged in Millbrae near the intersection of E. Hillcrest Boulevard and Hemlock Avenue, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
A witness told authorities that they saw two people standing on the roof of their car as waters rose beneath a Caltrain overpass, officials said.
Rescue crews arrived on scene and were able to rescue two people from the vehicle, but they were not able to save two people trapped in a second vehicle that was fully submerged, officials said.
"First responders attempted to gain access to the secondary vehicle during the attempted rescue, the conditions became too dangerous for first responders, as the floodwaters were rising rapidly," San Mateo Sheriff's Department authorities wrote in a statement.
After water receded, officials found two people dead in the second vehicle. The names of the two victims were not released.
