ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst last week saw a record number of coronavirus cases, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, the city had seen 6,253 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 336 from a week before. The previous local record was 248 cases in November 2020. The week before last, Elmhurst experienced an increase of 195 new cases. The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst increased by one in the last week, to 74. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.2 percent. The figure compares to 112 in Darien, 128 in DuPage County and Hinsdale, 131 in La Grange Park, 140 in suburban Cook County, 141 in Clarendon Hills, 143 in La Grange and 148 in Western Springs. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 2,021,302, a 3.9 percent increase from the previous week, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 27,435. Nationally, 51.6 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, a 1.9 percent increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 809,300 people have died from the virus in the United States.
