CHARLOTTE, NC — A police officer was shot in the line of duty Monday but is expected to be okay, according to the department. It happened after 7:20 a.m. Monday when officers were called to a report of a car break-in near the 6100 block of Treetop Court. CMPD says when they arrived, a 14-year-old pointed a firearm at officers and shot at them, striking an officer in the upper body. While police returned fire, the police say he did not hit anything or anyone. "14-year-old children should not be breaking into cars, stealing or possessing firearms," said a police spokesperson. "We are fortunate today this was not more serious." The teen was taken into custody and will be charged with attempted murder of a police officer. "It is a bad day anywhere when a 14-year-old tries to kill a police officer," he continued. Police are investigating if the firearm was taken during the car break-in.
