Here are the top 3 stories in Buffalo today: Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz announced Saturday that county hospitalizations for COVID-19 had dipped below 300 for the first time in a month. The last time the number of hospitalizations was under 300 was just before Thanksgiving, when 298 patients were recorded in the county's hospitals on Nov. 24. County officials credit the county's mask mandate with driving down the number of new cases and hospitalizations and have blamed the Omicron variant for the recent spike. (The Buffalo News)The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that the Buffalo River may no longer be an 'area of concern' by 2025. The news follows an eight-year effort to remove contaminated sediment from the river, which is set to be finished this month. The river must then pass a series of environmental tests, such as fish tissue sampling and a wildlife survey planned for next year, before the waterway can officially be delisted. (Buffalo News)Buffalo City Mission volunteers brought more than 2,500 meals to neighbors in need on Christmas Day. The festive ham dinners were delivered as part of the Mission's annual Hambone Express program.
