Spring 2022 Conference Session #1: Thursday, May 5, 2022 | 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.Play Therapy Group Supervision (separate registration required) Presenters: Kristie Opiola, PhD, LPC, Registered Play Therapist™ and Quinn Smelzer, PhD, LPC, Registered Play Therapist™ This group supervision is an opportunity for participants to present clinical cases in relation to childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences. This presentation will allow for engaging discussion and supervision with Drs. Kristie Opiola and Quinn Smelser, both experts in provision of play therapy with childhood trauma. Please come with specific supervision questions for discussion with Drs. Opiola and Smelser. Depending on the cases, two or three cases will be discussed. If you would like to present a case, contact Dr. Maggie Parker ([email protected]) after you have registered, in order to discuss your case and get guidelines for the presentation. Presenters are encouraged to email videotape, pictures of sand trays, or art work (with client permission). A maximum of 40 people for this supervision. First come, first serve. Kristie Opiola, PhD,LPC, Registered Play Therapist™ is an assistant professor at UNC Charlotte, researcher, licensed clinical mental health counselor, and registered play therapist who specializes in play therapy with children and families who have experienced trauma and relational disruptions. She has over 9 years of experience helping parents, teachers, and caregivers. Prior to being a counselor, Kristie has 14 years as a Child Life Specialist working with children and families experiencing acute medical issues. Quinn K. Smelser, PhD, NCC, LPC, Registered Play Therapist™ is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Loyola University Maryland where she teaches school counseling students and will begin offering play therapy courses. She has published book chapters and articles on play therapy, family therapy, ethical practice, animal-assisted counseling, and spirituality. Quinn presents at conferences nationally on issues relating to ethical practice, child-centered play therapy, trauma informed care for children, LGBT and gender identity, grief and loss, and spirituality. She has specialized play therapy and trauma training and is also a Registered Play Therapist and National Certified Counselor. For complete information on CE credit, see our website at: www.vaptplay.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Session #2: Friday, May 6, 2022 | 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Healing Attachment and Trauma Wounds Using Expressive Therapies Presenter: Marshall Lyles, LPC-S, LMFT-S, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ Attachment and trauma theories present a case for understanding that traumatically held memories, especially those involving caregivers, need to be handled with certain care. Expressive therapies, at their core, present natural opportunities for such trauma-sensitive treatment planning. Attention to material selection and expressive techniques can be used to enhance trauma-informed and relationally-sensitive concepts. This workshop will address these ideas while giving participants ample time for experiential practice. Objectives: Describe the trauma-sensitive components of expressive play therapyIdentify considerations for creating a trauma-sensitive expressive play space in your play therapy roomList at least three ways to establish safety in the therapeutic relationship using expressive play therapyCreate trauma-informed treatment plans for expressive play therapyDiscuss play therapy methods for processing different creative art approaches that feature trauma elementsDiscuss person of the play therapist themes relevant to maintaining deep trauma work with clientsContinuing Education: This program offers 6.00 contact hrs. with full attendance required. Break) Session #3: Saturday, May 7, 2022 | 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.Containment and Grounding in Sand-Based Play Therapy Speaker: Marshall Lyles, LPC-S, LMFT-S, RPT-S, This training will overview opportunities for utilizing containment and grounding strategies with common sandtray-based play therapy tools and techniques. Being proficient in regulation strategies allows therapists from all clinical theory backgrounds to assist clients in titrating nervous system ebbs and flows, resulting in wider windows of tolerance. Special attention will be given to noticing how dissociation can present in play therapy and relational methods for being with this nervous system state. Objectives: Describe and regulation theory through the lens of play therapy constructsExplain the concepts of window of tolerance through the lens of play therapy constructsDiscuss polyvagal theory as relevant to play therapyDescribe how dissociation may present in play therapyDiscuss sand-based play therapy techniques for implementing containment work with clientsDiscuss sand-based play therapy techniques for implementing grounding work with clientsContinuing Education: This program offers 6.00 contact hrs. with full attendance required. Continuing Education: This program is co-sponsored by the Virginia Association for Play Therapy and The Institute for Continuing Education. The program on May 6-7, 2022, offers a total of 12.00 contact hours (6.00 hrs. per day). Full attendance is required for the days you attend. Instructional Methodology: May include lecture, demonstration, audio/visual, experiential practice of techniques, case examples, large and small group discussion Marshall Lyles, LPC-S, LMFT-S, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ lives in the Austin, Texas, area and has over 20 years of practice in family and play therapy. Drawing on lessons learned from working with attachment trauma in a variety of mental health settings, Marshall regularly teaches on trauma, expressive therapies, and attachment-informed family work around the globe. In addition to maintaining a small clinical practice, Marshall also conducts supervision and consultation sessions with counseling professionals who are pursuing EMDR certification and RPT status, often with a particular focus on the use of sandtray therapy. Marshall has published in professional journals and magazines in addition to contributing to the books Counseling Families: Play-Based Treatment and EMDR with Children in the Play Therapy Room: An Integrated Approach. Marshall has also co-authored a book titled Advanced Sandtray Therapy.
