Expectations, not Exceptions: Screening and Evidence-Based Practices for Co-Occurring Disorders Those with behavioral health needs and substance use disorders have often received care in parallel systems with two distinct philosophies, training requirements and cultures. However, individuals in either system who have co-occurring disorders are the expectation, not the exception, and would benefit from services designed to address these complex needs. Emerging data and research, including trauma informed care, will be explored to provide insight and resources into evidence-based treatment. Supervision and ethical considerations will also be discussed, with guidelines and practical ideas to help agencies and practitioners create and sustain more effective integrated services.
