Description
LINDENHURST, NY —New York Blood Center (NYBC) is hosting a blood drive Monday in Lindenhurst in honor of a long-time Lindenhurst resident. Helen Lavorata died at age 59 in 2019 after battling brain cancer.
The blood drive will be at the American Legion Post 1120, 80 Herbert Ave., from 1 to 7 p.m.
Helen was married to Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata for 37 years and was "known by her friends and family as a kind and giving person," a statement from NYBC said.
"She would have wanted to help with the urgent need for blood at the current moment."
Her widower, Mayor Lavorata, wrote about her in this tribute from 2019:
"While I will miss her every day for the rest of my life, her memory will remain eternal. Nicole and I wish to thank you all for the constant prayers, kind words, visits, meals, gift card, donations, flowers and just your wonderful and healing love. While she had a short life, she lived more than most. She was kind and generous. She was the reason for all of my successes as they would not have been possible without her by my side. I will love you forever my sweet love. Until we meet again."
